Pet Insurance…..the Cancellation

I took a deep breath and cancelled our pet insurance policies. I have been researching and, had we decided to continue to insure our pups, would have gone with Trumpion. However; the cost for four golden retrievers, is over $1800 per year and that does not cover wellness care. We decided we should just put that money aside and have it available when/if needed.

Cost is well over $500 for Anna, our 9 year old golden. We thought about keeping insurance in case she needs accupuncture for arthritis as she gets older as each accupuncture session is almost $100, BUT the insurance policy won’t necessarily cover the cost if they think it is excessive. (And it is since humans can have it done for less than $70 per session.) Since Anna is a senior girl, even though she doesn’t act like it, we would likely not do treatment for cancer which, in my mind, is the main reason I bought pet insurance in the first place.

As for our youngsters, we can afford to repair ACLs as we have in the past, and are gambling they don’t get cancer. If they do we will have our savings $. Since most insurance policies are not going to cover experimental treatments, we’ll have to figure that out if, and when we need it for other illnesses.

Right now, we are sticking with preventive care; titers rather than over vaccinating; a healthy diet; exercise and mental stimulation.

For those of you with only one or two dogs, pet insurance may be worth it. READ the policies as there are so many ways for the company to NOT pay.
