Storage Mites

Maddie’s allergy test results came back. She is allergice to all types of mites, especially “storage mites” and flea saliva. Fortunately, we don’t feed a lot of dry kibble at our house, but Maddie lays right beside the area where we store the kibble in the kitchen when we feed the dogs.

Guess we’ll be buying smaller bags of dry food and keeping it in the freezer.

I gave Harry his first allergy shot on Wednesday (Joe had given previous shots, but he was at the marathon Caps game and we couldn’t wait until he got home.) and it was really easy. He just thought I was petting him. Not sure Maddie is going to be quite so easy.

Apparently as many as 80% of dog can be allergic to mites, so if your dog is itchy, you might want to try freezing their kibble and washing their dog bed/toys at least weekly in water that is at least 130 degrees. I ordered some stuff that is supposed to eliminate mite “protein” and a laundry additive in my journey of the mite.

As for the fleas, we’ll just keep using the Frontline Plus. Hate to, but dont’ see viable alternative.

K-9 Ingredient Meatballs

Roll up some tasty fun to share with the four-legged guests at your Cinco de Mayo party thanks to this delectable recipe from Rachael Ray.

You’ll need:
½ lb ground beef
½ cup cooked brown rice
1 carrot, shredded
1 stalk celery, finely chopped
½ cup frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained
2 tbs chopped flat-leaf parsley
2 tbs parmigiano-reggiano cheese
1 large egg
2 tsp ground turmeric
To make this recipe:
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Grease a muffin pan or a baking sheet. In a medium bowl, combine all of the ingredients and mix well. Fill each muffin tin with about 1/4 c mixture, or form the mixture into balls and place on baking sheet. Bake until cooked through, about 15 minutes. Let cool completely on a rack.
