Itching causes scratching which causes more itching which causes more scratching which causes skin irritations that can lead to hot spots and skin infections and skin and fur discolorations.
After two years of diet changes, shampoos, antihistimines, antibiotics, steriods pills and sprays, allergy testing, allergy injections, allergy avoidance our local vets said, “We give up. Go see a specialist in Baltimore.” So, after a 6 week wait for an appointment, tomorrow morning we’re off to see Dr. Buerger, DVM, DACVD Board Certified Skin Disease Specialist in Baltimore.
Since Harry isn’t supposed to eat before he sees Dr. Buerger (We changed our 2:30 pm appt to 9 am) our biggest hurdle will be to get everyonoe else fed and Harry out the door. Wish us luck. We’ll let you know how it goes.

I wish I had known you were heading that way. I’m picking up Clare in Annapolis around noon today.
Pat, My dog Jack saw Dr. Bueger for recurrent itchyness and hot spots. He did allergy testing and put him on allergy shots and a limited ingredient diet. It has helped but has not totally eliminated the problem. But he does get less hot spots than he used to. Good luck Harry!
Hope Harry finally gets some answers that will help him stop itching. It must be terrible to be itchy all the time.
More antibiotics and an anti fungal med; another shampoo and back in a month for more allergy testing. Local vets never treated his ongoing yeast infections which is why Harry has discolored fur in places. I’d recommend if you think your dog has allergies, skip the local vet and go straight to the dermatologist since we are redoing much of what we have been doing only more aggressively. (And he weighed 88 – he’s NOT the biggest loser.)
Sounds promising for Harry! Maybe this will be the right place that will stop his itchies.
(Honey hasn’t had her weigh in yet so I wouldn’t be too sure yet).
