Feeding Raw – An Update
A couple of weeks ago I started feeding my four goldens a raw diet as Harry and Maddie were both itchy messes…..Scratching so much they would wake me up at night even with daily doses of antihistimines and fish oil.
I had avoided making the switch, even though I have heard from other dog lovers what a difference it can make in a dog’s health, because it seems kind of gross….feeding raw meat, bones, organs such as hearts and kidney.
But, it was either off to the allergist in Baltimore or give this a try for a couple of months.
Well….it may be helping Harry at least. There are days I don’t give him an antihistimine at all and he no longer wakes me up in the middle of the night with incesssant scratching.
Verdict is still out with Maddie.
Their skin looks fine… a little pink, but no bites or hot spots.
As for the food….took quite a while to figure out how to feed raw – not be too grossed out, ensure the dogs get all the necessary nutrition and not break the bank.
I found Bravo Balanced Blends that contant meat, bones, organ meats, produce and supplements and meets feeding standards. Bravo can be ordered through Peppers Pet Pantry. I buy 5 lb chubs or rolls which is a one day supply of food for my four. Cost for a 5 lb chicken chub is $12, turkey $13 and beef $20. I don’t have to add anything. (I do still give them a vitamin, fish oil and a synovi G3) Cost for a month for four big dogs is about $ 450.
OR $225 for 2 dogs or $112 for a single dog….not bad.
Both Harry and Maddie are due for vet check ups in April, so we’re going to keep feeding raw at least through next month. So we’re still experimenting.
