Itchy Goldens

Lot’s of goldens have itcy skin, ear infections and hot spots due to allergies. Many flare up this time of year. I am not a vet, but here are some of the things I’ve learned about itchy goldens.

Allergies are the result of an immune system going “haywire.” Goal is to calm/soothe/boost the immune system. Three things to consider with skin issues:
1. Diet
2. Environment
3. Vaccines

Dump the prescription diets. They are useless. Ideally you would feed her a raw diet, but I appreciate that can be hard and expensive. So, if you use kibble make sure the first ingredients is meat. Fish is probably better. No by-products or wheat or corn.
A raw diet would be best, but if you cannot feed a raw diet add cooked lean meat, canned pumpkin, yogurt, fruit and vegetables to her kibble or canned food.
Give fish oil with meals. Wild Alaskan Salmon oil is preferred.
Give your golden a multivitamin. Remember, we’re trying to boost the immune system so your golden can tolerate allergens like other dogs do.
Peppers Pet Pantry in Callaway and Solomons and Clippers Canine Café on Solomons Island both carry good foods. I can send you an ebook about home prepared and raw diets is you’d like. (

Bath your golden a lot to wash off allergens. Our vet suggested weekly. Use baby shampoo or some other gentle, non-allergic shampoo.
No chemicals on your yard.
No cigarette smoke exposure.
Might try giving her minced garlic in her food twice per day rather than using Frontline or other flea prevention. I know ticks are bad this year, but……

Don’t give optional vaccinations such as lymes, bordetella, canine flu, lepto. Titer to check immunity level when due for vaccines. Rabies is required by law every 3 years. It’s the only one that is required. Try not to give your dog a vaccination when their immune system is struggling with allergies as vaccines rev up the immune system which is already charged up fighting allegens.

I’m currently learning about homeopathy remedies and “testing” one on Harry now. I’ll let you know how they work.

Has anyone tried adding coconut oil to their food?

Of course. It’s not a miracle oil for a dog with allergies
